Grandma's Photo Album - Page 16 - Snyders, McNeils, and Ellers in Wilkes County, NC

(Upper left) Photo taken 25 Aug 1933 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, at the Reddies River Primitive Baptist Church (near Wilbar).  This is Nicholas Grindstaff Snyder (1863-1944) at the funeral of his wife, Louise Jane Whittington Snyder (1863-1933).

(Upper right) Photo taken about 1924.  This is Toyce Etta McNeil Snyder (1905-1969) and her nephew, James Neil Snyder (1922-1993).  This photo was taken at the farm in Winston-Salem that Jimmy's parents (Tom and Nora, who was Toyce's sister) bought in 1924 and sold in 1925.  The car belonged to Tom Snyder - it was a 1924 Ford -- at least, that's what Nora, my grandmother, told me in 1981!

Toyce later married Tom's brother John Snyder.

(Lower left)  This is the Don Snyder family, about 1930.  This photo was taken in the front yard of my grandparent's farm in Millers Creek, Wilkes County, NC.
Donald Vance Snyder (1903-1986)
Mattie Lodemia "Demie" McNeil Snyder (1908-1997)
Clara Louise Snyder Church (1930-1998)

Don was grandfather's brother (my grandfather was Wiley Thomas "Tom" Snyder (1892-1988).)
Demie was my grandmother's sister (my grandmother was Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992).
So Clara was the double-first cousin of my mother and her siblings.

(Lower right)  The Eller twins with the three youngest children of Tom and Nora Snyder.  This photo was taken about 1940 in the front yard of my grandparents farmhouse the A.W. Eller homeplace in Millers Creek.
Left to right:  An Eller twin, Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1966), Kathy, Bette, Eller twin.

I believe these Eller twins are Betty Jo and Bobby Jean Eller, born 19 Aug 1930 in Wilkes County to Rev. Adolphus Worth Eller and Edith Wells Eller.  If so, these girls died on the same day -- 12 Apr 1962, in Morganton, Burke, North Carolina, at Broughton Hospital.  That was the state mental hospital for the western counties.  They were diagnosed with schizophrenia; cause of death undetermined after an autopsy.  They actually were triplets -- their brother Billie J. Eller was stillborn.  What tragedy this family suffered!

  1. Hi Barbara,
Love the site and the old pictures. I am the great grandson of the Rev. and Mrs. Eller. Just wanted to let you know that the bottom right picture on this page and the picture of the Rev. and Mrs. on page 18 of the scrapbook are at the home of the Ellers on Arbor Grove Church Road. I grew up around this home and recognize that porch. The porch on the Eller home wrapped around the left side of the house whereas the Snyder home looks like its just straight across the front. Hope that helps!

  2. Thanks, Andrew! Yes, my grandparent's house only had a porch on the front, and I see the photo above and on p. 18 has a wrap-around porch.
