Grandmas's Photo Album - Page 89 - Snyder Family in Wilkes County, N.C. and McLean Family in Gloucester, Mass.

(Top left)  Bette (living), Carrie Mae Snyder (1926-2001), Mozelle (living) - photo taken about 1945 in Wilkes County, N.C.

(Bottom left)  The Airstream trailer that Jim and Kay live in while in Gloucester, Mass.  Kay (living) is 2nd from left.  Jim (1922-1993) is at the far right.  I believe the 2 men are named McLean, but I don't recognize the women.

(Bottom center) Bette

(Right) I don't recognize this child.  If anyone has an idea, please let me know!

Grandma's Photo Album Page 84 - Snyders on the Blue Ridge Parkway and in Massachusetts in Winter

The Tom and Nora Snyder family and friends drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway about 1950.

(Top left) Betty (living) and Mozelle (living) with one of the Broyhill girls.

(Bottom left) Left to right:  Mrs. Broyhill holding one of her daughters, Nora Snyder, another Broyhill girl, then Betty and Mozelle.

(Bottom right) Nora and Tom Snyder.  Nora Bessie McNeil (1900-1992) wears a shawl that I believe her mother knitted.  Clara Eva Hettie Ellen Jarvis McNeil (1873-1959) knit a shawl for each of her six daughters.  The shawls were double-sided, different color on each side.  But Nora still looks cold!

Tom was Wiley Thomas Snyder (1892-1988).  It must be a Sunday because he is not wearing denim overalls, he is wearing his Sunday best suit.

(Top right) Tom and Nora's oldest son, Jimmy, by his Airstream Trailer in Gloucester, Mass.  James Neil Snyder (1922-1993) joined the Coast Guard in 1939.  While serving, his ship was in the Gloucester area, and he met his future wife, Kay (living).  Jim and Kay lived near Kay's family.

Grandma's Photo Album Page 72 - Snyders in Winston-Salem and Gloucester

(Left) My grandfather's brother, Russell Jess Snyder (1896-1984) and his bride, Sallie Scott (1900-1970).   This photo was possibly taken on their wedding day.  They were married in Winston-Salem on Christmas Eve in 1919.  They had four children.  Jess was a carpenter and house contractor.  They were married 50 years.

(Right)  A photo of my uncle and some of his sailor buddies in front of the Gloucester sailing memorial.  Uncle Jimmy is on the right.  He was James Neil Snyder (1922-1993).  He joined the Coast Guard in 1939 and was discharged in 1946.  He married a wonderful woman, Kay, and they lived in Gloucester.  He worked as a tugboat engineer in New York harbor - seven days on, seven days off.  He picked up the Gloucester accent so well that you would never know he was born and raised in North Carolina!

Grandma's Photo Album Page 70 - MacLeans in Mass. and Snyders in N.C.

(Top left) MacLean family in Gloucester, Mass. The woman on the right is Florence Ann "Flora" Gillis MacLean (abt 1891-1951).  The man on the left is one of her sons -- John, Archie, Ralph, Maurice, or Stanley.  The child is likely her granddaughter. My uncle Jimmy married a MacLean daughter, Kay.

(Bottom left)  Kay is 2nd from left, with Mozelle, Nora, and Bette.  Kay, Mozelle, and Bette are living.  Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992) was my grandmother.  This photo was taken on my grandparents' farm near Millers Creek in Wilkes County, N.C.  I recognize the top of the barn at the back.  I guess my uncle Jimmy drove this car from Massachusetts where he lived to N.C. since my grandparents' didn't have a car.

(Bottom right) My grandparents, Nora and Wiley Thomas "Tom" Snyder (1892-1988) and their son James Neil "Jimmy" Snyder (1922-1993).  Jimmy was in the Coast Guard from 1939 to 1946, so I guess the photos on this page were taken before he was discharged.

Grandma's Photo Album Page 59 - Double First Cousins

(Top left) Bette (living).  Great smile, and I love her braids!

(Top center) My great-grandmother:  Clara Eva Hettie Ellen Jarvis McNeil (1873-1959), on her birthday.  Apparently, at least four of her six daughters competed to see who could bake the best cake!

(Top right) Eva with a pretty corsage.  She was bedridden the last few years of her life.  I see a photo of her late husband (George Thomas McNeil (1870-1930) on the table, and a picture of Jesus on the wall.  Eva's granddaughter Dorothy told me that Eva stayed with one daughter for a while, then stayed with another.  She carried her pictures with her - Jesus and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  She was a staunch Democrat.  She hated Abe Lincoln, probably because her father served as a Confederate soldier, and was wounded twice.  She called Lincoln a "dirty old man."

(Lower left) A son of John McLean of Gloucester, Mass.  This would either be John Jr or Neil, I believe.

(Lower right) A bunch of Snyders in front of my grandparents house on Pleasant Home Church Road in Millers Creek, Wilkes County, N.C.  These people are two McNeil sisters who married two Snyder brothers and their children. So the kids are all either siblings or double first cousins.

Front row, left to right:  Carrie Snyder (1926-2001) in the dark jacket and white slacks, Bette (living), Martha (living).

Middle row, left to right:  Mozelle (living), Mattie Lodemia "Demie" McNeil Snyder (1908-1997), Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992), and Clara Louise Snyder (1930-1998).

Back row, left to right: Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1996) and Red (living).

Grandma's Photo Album Page 52 - Snyders in N.C. and Mass.

All the photos on the left half of the page were taken in Wilkes County, N.C., on my grandparents' farm in Millers Creek.

(Top left) Mozelle (living) swinging a golf club in the field.

(Top center) Carrie Mae Snyder (1926-2001) modeling a fancy dress.

(Top right) James Neil "Jimmy" Snyder (1922-1993) in front of his trailer in Gloucester, Mass.

(Bottom left) Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1996) and Carrie on the farm in Millers Creek.

(Bottom right) Jimmy's trailer in Gloucester, Mass.  After being disharged from the Coast Guard, Jimmy worked on tug boats in New York harbor - 7 days on, 7 days off.  He lived in Gloucester between jobs.

Grandma's Photo Album - Page 49 - Snyders in Wilkes County and McLeans in Gloucester

(Top left)  Snyders in Wilkes County, NC.  Left to right:  Mozelle (living), Kay (living), my grandmother Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992), and Bette (living)

(Top right)  More Snyders in Wilkes County:  My grandparents and their 5 grown children.  Left to right:  James Neil Snyder (1922-1993), my grandfather Wiley Thomas Snyder (1892-1988), my grandmother Nora, Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1996), Bette (living), Carrie Mae Snyder Disher (1926-2001), and Mozelle (living).

(Bottom left)  Some members of the McLean (or MacLean) family in Gloucester, Mass.  Left to right:  Florence Ann "Flora" Gillis McLean (1891-1951) and two of her sons, Archibald Alex "Archie" McLean (1915-1997) and Stanley Brower McLean (Abt 1927 - before 2008).

(Bottom right)  Kay (living) and her brother Stanley (I think), in Gloucester.

Grandma's Photo Album Page 47 - McLeans in Gloucester and McNeils and Snyders in Wilkes County

(Upper left) My uncle Jim (James Neil Snyder) married a McLean girl.  Here are some of her family in a photo probably taken in Gloucester, Mass., in 1963, when my grandparents visited their son, whom they called Neil.  Left to right:
  • Flora Gillis McLean (~1891-1951)
  • Uncle Jim - James Neil Snyder (1922-1993)
  • Unknown woman (not Jim's wife)
  • Archie McLean (1915-1997)

(Lower left)
My grandparents:
  • Wiley Thomas "Tom" Snyder (1892-1988)
  • Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992)
I think this photo was taken on a Sunday because Tom is dressed in church clothes.  The other six days, he wore overalls to do farm chores.

(Right) My grandmother's mother, Clara Eva Hettie Ellen Jarvis McNeil (1873-1959).
She had red hair when she was young, but it turned white.

Grandma's Photo Album Page 46 - Snyders in Wilkes and in Gloucester with McLeans

(Left) The John Snyder family in Wilkes County, N.C.  John B. Snyder (1894-1969) was my grandfather's brother.  His wife, Toyce Etta McNeil Snyder (1905-1969) was my grandmother's sister.  So their daughter, Dorothy (living), is my mother's double first cousin!

(Right)  My grandparents visited their oldest son in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1963.

Standing, left to right:
  • My grandmother, Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992)
  • My grandfather, Wiley Thomas "Tom" Snyder (1892-1988)
  • Ralph McLean
  • Caroline (living)

Seated, left to right:

Grandma’s Photo Album Page 41 - Paper House, Snyders and Broyhills in Wilkes County

(Top left) The paper piano at The Paper House in Rockport, Massachussets.  I believe my uncle Jim sent this postcard, since he lived in Gloucester and Rockport is nearby.  The Paper House is still a tourist attraction - see this web site:  http://www.paperhouserockport.com

(Top right) Uncle Jim (James Neil Snyder, 1922-1993) and his wife Kay (living).  I believe this photo was taking in the front yard of my grandparents' farm house on Pleasant Home church road, Millers Creek, Wilkes County, NC.

(Bottom left) This woman was a friend of my Uncle Ralph (Ralph Lewis Snyder, 1932-1996).  He brought her to meet his parents, but we don't know her name.

(Bottom right)  The four oldest daughters of Wanda Barnett Broyhill (1920-2010) and Louis Elmer Broyhill (1918-1999). All these girls are living, so I'll just give their first names (left to right):  Myrtle, Mary Louise, Adrian, and Vicky.

I remember playing with Vicky when I spent a week each summer at my grandparents, attending Vacation Bible School.  Bible school was only in the mornings, so I had lots of free time every afternoon.  I would sometimes go over to Vicky's family farm and we'd play for a while, but she had chores to do.  One time, we were walking along, and came upon an old neighbor lady on her front porch.  She was plucking a chicken, and asked me to hold it while she went to fetch more hot water.  As a city girl, I found that very yucky!

Grandma’s Photo Album Page 40 - Snyder Family in Gloucester and Wilkes County

This page has photos of my grandparents' children.  My grandparents were Wiley Thomas Snyder (1892-1988) and Nora Bessie McNeil (1900-1992).  They were both born and died in Wilkes County, N.C.

(Top left) James Neil Snyder (1922-1993), my uncle, and two friends at the Gloucester monument..  I think Uncle Jimmy is the one on the right.  He joined the Coast Guard in 1939, when he was 17.  I always wondered how a boy from the mountains decided to join the Coast Guard.  He made a career of it, so I guess he didn't get sea sick!

I think the other three photos were taken in Wilkes County, N.C., probably on my grandparent's farm in Millers Creek.

(Top right) Mozelle and Bette (both living).

(Lower left)  Mozelle and my mother, Carrie Snyder (1926-2001).

(Lower right) Left to right:  Mozelle, Carrie, Jimmy, Jimmy's wife Kay (living), Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1996), and Bette.

Grandma's Photo Album - Page 32 - Snyders of Wilkes and McLeans of Gloucester

This page relates to James Neil Snyder (1922-1993), my uncle.

He was born in Forsyth County, N.C., and raised in Wilkes County, N.C.
When he was 17, he joined the Coast Guard.  He served from 18 Sep 1939 to 11 Oct 1946.
In Gloucester, Mass., he met Kay McLean, and they were married 31 Dec 1943 in Gloucester.

After the war, Uncle Jimmy worked on tug boats in New York City.  When he was off, he lived with Kay in Gloucester.
He and Kay traveled to North Carolina to visit relatives about once a year.
Jim and Kay had no children.

(Top left) Jim with his brother-in-law, Maurice McLean and his son, and Jim's mother-in-law, Flora (or Florence) Gillis McLean (about 1891 to 1951).

(Top right) Flora McLean and another of her sons, Stanley

(Bottom left) Kay

(Bottom right)  Jim on a visit to Wilkes County, N.C.  Left to right:  Jim, his parents, and his brother Ralph.  His parents were Wiley Thomas Snyder (1892-1988) and Nora Bessie McNeil Snyder (1900-1992).  Ralph Lewis Snyder (1932-1996).
